For more than twenty-three years, Phatso’s Bakery has been part of the fabric of Chester City. Known for fresh, made-from-scratch donuts, pastries, muffins, cakes, and pies, the bakery became a staple for families, celebrations, and daily routines.

Owner Richard Wilcox built the business through consistency, craftsmanship, and dedication. His work earned multiple “Best of Delco” awards and recognition as Chester’s Best Bakery—proof of both quality and loyalty within the community.

The bakery operated out of a modest 1,200-square-foot space but carried a reputation that extended far beyond its footprint.

An Unexpected Pause

Life, however, brought an unexpected interruption.

A necessary medical procedure required Mr. Wilcox to step away from the business, forcing Phatso’s to close for more than a year. For any small business, a pause of that length can be devastating. Revenue stops, equipment sits idle, and customers seek alternatives.

But the desire to return never left.

As recovery progressed, Richard began planning a comeback—one that would not only reopen the doors but strengthen the operation for the future.

Rebuilding with Intention

Reopening a business after a prolonged closure requires more than unlocking the front door. Equipment needed updating. The facility required renovations. Staffing had to be rebuilt from scratch.

Most importantly, Richard recognized that hiring a general manager would provide operational stability and allow the bakery to grow beyond a single-operator model.

With support from Ignite CDFI and Propell Credit Union, a coordinated $100,000 financing package made that vision possible.

The funding will modernize equipment, refresh the facility, provide working capital, and support new hires—laying the groundwork for a structured and sustainable relaunch.
