Third Perk Coffeehouse's New Chapter: Closing Downtown, Opening New Horizons

By Nate Dillard

The Big Picture - Third Perk Coffeehouse's Transition: Juanita-Michelle Darden, the owner of Third Perk Coffeehouse & Wine Bar, has announced the closure of its downtown Dayton location on December 9. This decision marks a strategic shift towards expanding the business on Dayton's west side, according to the Dayton Business Journal.

Zoom In - Future Endeavors: In 2022, Darden purchased a building at 3907 W. Third Street for $100,000. Slated to reopen in spring 2024, this new location will offer not just coffee but also ice cream and donuts. Additionally, a Soul Food Carryout, in partnership with Atlanta-based Chef Mark Brown, is set to launch by February 2024.

The Bottom Line - Juanita's Vision: Darden notes the saturation of coffee shops downtown as a key factor in her decision. She emphasizes her desire to serve the west side of Dayton, where she originates. The new location is undergoing significant renovations, including the addition of a drive-through, enhancing customer convenience.

The Community Angle - A Legacy Continues: The closing of Third Perk's downtown site coincides with the release of Darden's debut book, "The People's Coffeehouse." This book celebrates the coffeehouse's role as a vibrant community hub, featuring customer stories, poems, and photos. It captures the essence of Third Perk as more than just a coffee shop but a place of collaboration and community building. The book underscores Darden's commitment to her community and her roots in Dayton, reflecting her influence as a local business leader and educator.

What's Next - An Exciting Transition: As Third Perk transitions, the focus shifts to the launch of the new location and the release of Darden's book. These developments represent a new phase in Third Perk's journey, promising to continue its legacy in a new setting while enriching Dayton's west side community.
